Rectal Ozone Insufflation London
Rectal Ozone Insufflation is a safe, non-invasive and highly effective form of systemic ozone therapy in which medical grade ozone gas is gently introduced into the colon via the rectum. The colon’s large vascular surface area allows the ozone to be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, producing systemic anti-inflammatory, immune modulating and antimicrobial effects throughout the body – without any needles or injections. At Proback Clinic in Victoria, Central London we offer Rectal Ozone Insufflation as a standalone treatment and as part of a combined ozone therapy protocol. For our full range of ozone delivery methods please visit our Ozone Therapy London page.
Why Rectal Ozone Insufflation?
For many patients Rectal Ozone Insufflation is the preferred route of systemic ozone delivery because it is completely non-invasive – no needles, no blood drawing and no IV cannula is required. Despite being administered locally it produces genuinely systemic effects through absorption into the portal circulation, making it one of the most efficient and patient-friendly routes of ozone administration available. It is particularly well suited to patients who are needle-averse, have difficult venous access or who are looking for an accessible and repeatable form of ozone therapy they can receive regularly alongside other treatments.
What Conditions Is It Used For?
Rectal Ozone Insufflation is used at Proback for a wide range of conditions with systemic inflammatory, immune, and gut-related components, including:
- Inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis
- Gut dysbiosis and SIBO – small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
- Irritable bowel syndrome with an inflammatory component
- Systemic inflammatory conditions including fibromyalgia and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
- Chronic fatigue syndrome and post viral syndromes including Long COVID
- Chronic infections – bacterial, viral and fungal – where systemic antimicrobial ozone activity is beneficial
- Immune system dysregulation and autoimmune conditions
- General detoxification and health optimisation
- As a complement to localised regenerative treatments for patients with both local and systemic inflammatory presentations
How Does It Work?
Medical grade ozone gas is introduced via a small, smooth catheter into the rectum and retained for a short period – typically 10 to 15 minutes – during which the ozone diffuses through the colon wall into the portal circulation and from there into the systemic bloodstream.
Once absorbed the ozone triggers the same anti-inflammatory, immune modulating and antimicrobial cascade as other systemic ozone routes – modulating cytokine production, activating the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, improving oxygen utilisation at the cellular level and selectively destroying pathogens without harming healthy tissue.
For gut specific conditions the local contact of ozone with the colonic mucosa also produces direct antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects within the gut itself – making Rectal Insufflation uniquely valuable for conditions with both local gut and systemic inflammatory components.
What to Expect at Your Session
Each session takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. You will lie comfortably on your side while a small, smooth catheter is gently inserted into the rectum. A carefully calibrated volume of medical grade ozone gas is then gently introduced over a few minutes. You will be asked to retain the gas for a short period while it absorbs. The procedure is comfortable and the vast majority of patients find it very well tolerated. Mild bloating or flatulence immediately after the procedure is normal and settles quickly. You can resume all normal activities immediately.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
For acute conditions or as an immune support measure a short course of three to six sessions is typically recommended. For established chronic conditions – particularly gut related or systemic inflammatory presentations – a course of ten to fifteen sessions over six to eight weeks produces the best and most lasting results, often followed by periodic maintenance sessions. Your practitioner will recommend a personalised protocol based on your specific condition and response.

The procedure is very well tolerated by the vast majority of patients. Some mild bloating or flatulence immediately after the session is normal and settles quickly. The catheter used is small and smooth and the ozone is introduced gently at a carefully calibrated pressure.
Yes - Rectal Ozone Insufflation has an excellent safety record when performed with medical grade ozone at correctly calibrated concentrations by trained practitioners. It is one of the most widely used and extensively studied routes of ozone administration in clinical practice.
Absolutely - Rectal Ozone Insufflation is frequently combined with IV Ozonated Saline and with localised Prolozone or Prolotherapy injections at Proback to address both systemic and local inflammatory components simultaneously.
