What Is Neuro Prolotherapy?
Neuro Prolotherapy – also known as Perineural Injection Therapy or PIT – is a treatment developed by New Zealand physician Dr John Lyftogt in which a very low concentration of natural dextrose solution is injected subcutaneously along the pathways of hypersensitised superficial nerves.
Rather than blocking or destroying the nerve signal, Neuro Prolotherapy works by calming the chronic neurogenic inflammation that is maintaining the pain – restoring normal nerve function rather than suppressing it temporarily.
It is completely natural, contains no steroids or synthetic drugs and has an excellent safety profile.

What Types of Nerve Pain Does It Help?
- Peripheral neuropathy – including diabetic neuropathy, post viral neuropathy and idiopathic peripheral neuropathy

How Does It Differ From Nerve Blocks and Medications?
Nerve blocks use local anaesthetic to switch off the nerve signal temporarily – the pain returns when the block wears off because nothing has been addressed.
Medications like gabapentin and pregabalin dampen the nerve signal system-wide, often with significant side effects and without addressing the underlying neurogenic inflammation.
Neuro Prolotherapy works at the level of the individual nerve pathway – delivering a natural dextrose solution subcutaneously along the affected nerve to reduce the chronic inflammation around the nerve itself.
This calms the hypersensitised pathway and restores normal nerve function gradually over a course of treatment, with results that are cumulative and lasting rather than temporary.
Treatment and Sessions
Treatment involves a series of very small, superficial injections along the course of the affected nerve pathways.
The specific nerves targeted depend entirely on the patient’s symptom distribution and clinical findings at assessment.
Sessions take 20 to 40 minutes depending on the extent of the nerve pathways involved.
Most patients require between four and ten sessions for meaningful and lasting improvement, with results accumulating progressively across the course of treatment.
