Sciatica – pain, numbness, tingling or weakness radiating from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg – is one of the most debilitating pain presentations we see at Proback Clinic.
For many patients the structural compression driving their sciatica has been partially or substantially resolved – by time, physiotherapy or other treatment – yet the pain and neurological symptoms persist.
This is because the sciatic nerve has become chronically sensitised and continues to generate pain signals even after the original compression has reduced.
Neuro Prolotherapy directly addresses this neurogenic persistence – calming the hypersensitised nerve pathways along the full course of the sciatic nerve.
What Is Neuro Prolotherapy?
Neuro Prolotherapy – also known as Perineural Injection Therapy or PIT – is a treatment developed by New Zealand physician Dr John Lyftogt in which a very low concentration of natural dextrose solution is injected subcutaneously along the pathways of hypersensitised superficial nerves.
Rather than blocking or destroying the nerve signal, Neuro Prolotherapy works by calming the chronic neurogenic inflammation that is maintaining the pain – restoring normal nerve function rather than suppressing it temporarily.
It is completely natural, contains no steroids or synthetic drugs and has an excellent safety profile.

How Does It Help Sciatica Specifically?
When the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated – by a disc herniation, piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction or spinal stenosis – the nerve and its surrounding tissue become inflamed and hypersensitised.
Over time this sensitisation can become self-sustaining, meaning the nerve continues to generate pain signals even after the original mechanical cause has been reduced.
This is why many sciatica patients continue to suffer long after the disc bulge has receded on imaging.
Neuro Prolotherapy targets this neurogenic inflammation along the course of the sciatic nerve – from the lumbar nerve roots through the gluteal region, down the posterior thigh and into the lower leg – calming the sensitised pathways at multiple points simultaneously.
It is most powerful when combined with treatments that address the underlying mechanical cause.

Treatment and Sessions
Sessions target the superficial nerve pathways along the course of the sciatic nerve – typically the lumbar region, the sacral plexus area, the piriformis region and the posterior leg as appropriate to the specific symptom pattern.
Sessions take 20 to 40 minutes depending on the extent of the pathway treated.
Most patients require four to eight sessions for lasting results.
