Neuro Prolotherapy for Knee Pain London
For many patients with chronic knee pain the structural damage visible on imaging – cartilage wear, meniscus changes, ligament laxity – does not fully account for the level of pain they are experiencing.
This is often because a significant component of their pain is being maintained by chronically hypersensitised nerve pathways around the knee rather than by ongoing structural damage alone.
At Proback Clinic in Victoria, Central London we use Neuro Prolotherapy to address this neurogenic component – often in combination with Prolotherapy and Prolozone to address both the nerve sensitisation and the underlying tissue damage simultaneously.
What Is Neuro Prolotherapy?
Neuro Prolotherapy – also known as Perineural Injection Therapy or PIT – is a treatment developed by New Zealand physician Dr John Lyftogt in which a very low concentration of natural dextrose solution is injected subcutaneously along the pathways of hypersensitised superficial nerves.
Rather than blocking or destroying the nerve signal, Neuro Prolotherapy works by calming the chronic neurogenic inflammation that is maintaining the pain – restoring normal nerve function rather than suppressing it temporarily.
It is completely natural, contains no steroids or synthetic drugs and has an excellent safety profile.
For a full overview of the treatment please visit our main Neuro Prolotherapy London page.
Who Is It Suitable For?
- Chronic knee pain where previous injections or treatments have not produced lasting results
- Knee pain that is disproportionately severe relative to imaging findings
- Post surgical knee pain – including pain following knee replacement or meniscus surgery where nerve sensitisation around the scar tissue is generating persistent symptoms
- Knee osteoarthritis with a significant neurogenic pain component
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome with nerve involvement
- Chronic knee pain associated with fibromyalgia or widespread sensitisation
- Knee pain where burning, shooting or hypersensitive symptoms suggest nerve pathway involvement
Neuro Prolotherapy is most often combined with Prolotherapy and Prolozone for knee pain at Proback – see our Prolotherapy for Knee Pain page for a full overview of our regenerative knee treatment approach.
Treatment and Sessions
Neuro Prolotherapy for knee pain involves superficial injections along the nerve pathways supplying the knee – including the saphenous nerve, the infrapatellar branch, the common peroneal nerve branches and the tibial nerve branches as appropriate to the specific pain pattern.
Sessions take 20 to 30 minutes and most patients notice progressive improvement across four to six sessions spaced one to two weeks apart.

FAQs
Yes - even where significant structural changes are present, a meaningful proportion of chronic knee pain is maintained by nerve sensitisation.
Addressing the neurogenic component alongside Prolotherapy and Prolozone for the joint itself is where we consistently see our best results for complex knee presentations.
Yes - post knee replacement pain is one of the more common presentations we see.
Nerve sensitisation and scar tissue around the prosthesis can generate significant ongoing pain even where the implant is functioning correctly.
Neuro Prolotherapy and Hydro-Release can both play a meaningful role in these cases.
