Why Neuro Prolotherapy Works for Back Pain
Neuro Prolotherapy – also known as Perineural Injection Therapy or PIT – is a treatment developed by New Zealand physician Dr John Lyftogt in which a very low concentration of natural dextrose solution is injected subcutaneously along the pathways of hypersensitised superficial nerves.
Rather than blocking or destroying the nerve signal, Neuro Prolotherapy works by calming the chronic neurogenic inflammation that is maintaining the pain – restoring normal nerve function rather than suppressing it temporarily.
It is completely natural, contains no steroids or synthetic drugs and has an excellent safety profile.

What Types of Back Pain Does It Help?
Neuro Prolotherapy is particularly well suited to the following back pain presentations:
- Chronic lower back pain that has not fully responded to physiotherapy, manual therapy or steroid injections
- Neurogenic back pain – where the pain is driven by hypersensitised nerve pathways rather than purely structural causes
- Central sensitisation – where the nervous system has learned to amplify and maintain the pain signal beyond the original injury
- Facet joint pain and associated nerve irritation
- Sacroiliac joint pain with a significant nerve component
- Post surgical back pain – where scar tissue or altered nerve pathways are generating persistent pain following disc or spinal surgery
- Back pain associated with fibromyalgia or widespread pain sensitisation
- Chronic back pain where all structural causes have been investigated and imaging is relatively normal
For structural disc or joint pathology we typically combine Neuro Prolotherapy with Prolotherapy or Prolozone to address both the nerve sensitisation and the underlying tissue damage simultaneously.
How Is the Treatment Performed?
Neuro Prolotherapy for back pain involves a series of very small, superficial injections placed just beneath the skin along the affected nerve pathways in the lower back, sacral region and associated areas.
The needle is extremely fine and the injections are placed at a depth of just a few millimetres – making this one of the most comfortable injection procedures we offer.
Sessions typically take 20 to 30 minutes.
No ultrasound guidance is required for this procedure as the target structures are superficial.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume all normal activities immediately after their appointment.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most patients with chronic back pain require between four and eight sessions of Neuro Prolotherapy for the best and most lasting results, spaced one to two weeks apart.
Many notice a meaningful improvement in their pain levels within two to three sessions.
Results tend to accumulate progressively – each session builds on the last as the nerve pathways gradually return to normal function.
For longstanding or severe chronic back pain a longer course may be recommended.

"I started coming here in June 2024 with a lot of back pain in my lower back which I had been carrying for several years, I couldn't stand up properly, my left foot was raised, I was assessed and given an x-ray and then advised of suitable treatment, my diagnosis was Degenerative disc disease, so basically my lower back needed stretching out, my discs were too close together and nearly touching and that had been resolved by decompression and shockwave, twice a week. This takes time for your body to adjust to, so be patient with yourself. I had this course of treatment initially for about 6 months, by which time my back had significantly improved and also I had come off pain killers I had been taking.
