What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is considered an excellent form of therapy for conditions such as chronic back pain, chronic neck pain, knee pain, ankle joint pain, degenerative disc disease, shoulder and elbow pain.
Prolotherapy usually corrects the source of pain in up to 85% of patients becoming permanently pain free.
Multitude studies have shown the positive effects on tissues using dextrose to stabilize and strengthen ligaments. The theory behind prolotherapy is that when glucose is injected into the ligaments, it helps develop new blood vessels to feed and heal ligaments therefore reducing pain in joints.

FAQs
Most injuries will have a negative effect on ligaments and tendons, therefore restricting the ability of the tendons and ligaments to regenerate and heal themselves. Since ligaments don’t have blood flow passed the age of 25 years old, it is not possible to heal and leaves the individual with unstable joints that tend to wear a lot faster. Also, inflammation tends to be at the bone/ligament junction making the joint painful. Injecting dextrose at the ligament/bone junction has shown to induce blood flow into the ligaments and help them heal.
Most of the joints, including, back, neck, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrist, feet (plantar fascia) soft tissue area such as hamstrings, gluts, trigger points.
Most cases will respond between 3 and 6 treatments. Prolotherapy can also be combined with other treatments like shockwave therapy, and spinal decompression. This varies depending on the patient’s problems, their age and their level of general health.
Prolotherapy is considered to be a safe and effective form of regenerative treatment for ligaments and tendon, it is also being used for scar tissue that has built up in fascia in the form of hydro dissection. It is considered by many to be a good alternative to surgery.
Most patients will feel a relief of 25 to 80% of their pain. Some patients will feel the injection sites but usually the relief of pain is much greater than the soreness of the injection site.
After the first treatment, a gap of 3 to 4 weeks is advised to receive the following treatment, then a gap of 4 weeks is usually recommended for subsequent treatments.
There are both injection techniques, prolozone will use ozone as its main active ingredient and prolotherapy will use glucose. The main purpose of prolotherapy is to strengthen ligaments and ultimately reduce ligaments/bone junctions’ pain and inflammation which is usually not painful but encourage healing factors and blood flow to ligaments. For example, with knee joints, prolotherapy tends to work very well to strengthen ligaments as well as reduce pain, and Prolozone tends to work very well with helping cartilage recover. So, often, we use them in combination.
